Palma: well worth a city break any time of year
9 November, 2022The city of Palma is a tourist destination for various reasons, but is a place worth discovering at any time of the year. A getaway to the Balearic capital, which is perfectly connected to the United Kingdom, is an ideal opportunity to enjoy a few days of leisure in a mild climate even in winter, and in a place where you can enjoy the best range of accommodation, culture, gastronomy, shopping, sports, etc.
Palma is a Mediterranean city, modern, accessible and with good infrastructures. Sophisticated and diverse, it is also authentic and captivating. And it has unique characteristics making it a magnificent destination, offering travellers all the attractions one could ever imagine. In fact, in 2015 the Times deemed it “ The best place to live in the world”. And naturally you can also enjoy short yet very pleasant stays there.
To begin with, Bay of Palma has a privileged climate thanks to its location, with an average annual temperature of 18ºC, and also to the sea, which softens and regulates it, so that the thermal seasonality is not as marked as in the middle of the continent at the same latitude. What’s more, the capital receives the action of the 'embat' sea breeze which rises at noon, entering from the sea to the land and refreshing the environment.
A new concept of tourism
A changing tourism model which the city has been experiencing since 2010, with a defined commitment to becoming an international benchmark and a commitment to diversification beyond sun and beach, has meant that it has a powerful hotel base with 72 establishments, to which another 4 will be added by the end of 2023, as well as the existing holiday range in Playa de Palma.
The special offer of boutique hotels stands out. Palma has become one of the European cities with the largest number of these charming establishments in its old town, with a total of 31. Some of the oldest are the Palacio Ca Sa Galesa, Hotel Tres, Hotel Santa Clara, Hotel Convent de la Missió... And others have been added over the years, the most modern being Can Cirera, Puro Grand Hotel and HM Palma Blanc. The vast majority have revitalised historic buildings.
But the reason for a getaway to Palma is not just the ease of getting a flight from any major European airport nor the guarantee of a wonderful hotel stay, as the Balearic capital offers so much more. The city offers many ways to discover its art, history and culture. An offer which deserves to be better known and which is always surprising as it is imposing, majestic and stately.
Visitors discover the most historic Palma, with patios, magnificent religious architecture, emblematic buildings, viewpoints with spectacular views, splendid art galleries and fascinating museums. An artistic and cultural content which deserves to be better known and which surprises all those who traditionally think of Palma as an exclusively sun and beach destination. Although we must not forget that it has five sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters.
Mediterranean spirit
A visit to Palma also means discovering its gastronomy based on local products with certificate of origin and excellent quality, fitting perfectly with the city’s Mediterranean spirit. In addition, Palma is also a benchmark gastronomic territory for great international chefs who offer their most creative and innovative recipes in their premises.
In addition, a sea of possibilities opens up for tourists looking to enjoy sports: cycling, sailing, running, golf, sailing, skating or walks, to name but a few. It also hosts major national and international sporting events.
Finally, it should be noted that Palma is an ideal base to get to know the rest of Mallorca. All the island’s attractions are about an hour's drive away. This makes the city an excellent starting point for various excursions. For example, trips can be planned to the Serra de Tramuntana (with hiking trails and nature), to the north, with its beaches and dreamlike landscapes, to the coves and natural wonders of the east of the island, to the extensive southern beaches and the rural and gastronomic world of the interior.
Palma offers so many opportunities for getaway tourism that visitors will become a regular in the city, seeking refuge in this destination every time they have a few days off or simply want to break the monotony in a way that will live on in their fondest memories.
