Christmas lights
One of the most vibrant moments which can be enjoyed in Palma throughout the year is the turning on of the Christmas lights. The Town Hall and numerous businesses and residents have contributed in recent months by setting up impressive light structures, decorating trees and different urban elements. Everything is planned for this moment to arrive, which this year will take place on Friday 18th November in the Plaza de la Reina, when residents and visitors move to the city centre.
In 2022 it is significant because the light-switching goes back to normal after two years which were suspended or limited due to the pandemic. The event (which lasts until Saturday 19th) is made up of seven shows and lighting installations which represent the opening act of the Christmas festivities, which in Palma last until 6th January, Epiphany. But the lights will still shine for two more weeks. This is because Sant Sebastià, the patron saint of the city, is celebrated on 20th January.
Thanks to the Christmas lights, Palma has an excellent atmosphere for two months of the year, improving the experience of tourists who come to discover an illuminated city and enjoy a chain of festivities beginning with the Immaculate/Constitution short break in early December. They continue with Christmas, New Year and Epiphany, and after a short break, this culminates with patron saint festivities characterised by the desire for fun among the people of Palma, meat roasting on coals and concerts in all the squares of the city centre. Another great reason to visit this pearl of the Mediterranean.
