Sustainable mobility: The first railway train in the Canaries

24 September, 2025

Gran Canaria and Tenerife will have their first railway line after the signing of a protocol between the Government of the Canaries, the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility and the inter-island councils. The agreement guarantees the financing of two projects considered strategic to connect the capitals with the main tourist centres in the south of both islands.

In Gran Canaria, the route will link Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Telde, the airport and Maspalomas-Playa del Inglés, at an estimated cost of €2 billion. The Inter-island council will draw up the technical projects and manage the permits, while the Ministry will ensure its economic viability and obtain European funds.

In Tenerife, the so-called “Tren del Sur” will begin with the 30-kilometre, €800 million San Isidro-Adeje section. It will make it possible to complete the route in 13 minutes, relieve traffic on the TF-1 and reduce some 72,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year. A second phase will connect Santa Cruz with San Isidro, on a 51-kilometre, €1.5-billion route.

The regional and island authorities stress that this is a commitment to sustainable mobility, with an impact on competitiveness, innovation and emissions reduction.
