Chamartín is being transformed to lead high-speed rail in Madrid

14 January, 2026

The expansion works at Chamartín-Clara Campoamor station (Madrid) continue to progress and are already starting to materialise in visible improvements for travellers. Since late December, the infrastructure has had nine high-speed tracks in service, compared to the six that existed before the start of the refurbishment. This is a key milestone within a project that will culminate in 12 through tracks and will consolidate Chamartín as a strategic component of the Madrid and national rail system.

Five through tracks and four at the northern head are currently operational, while work continues to enlarge the main concourse and improve the station’s functionality. The project, managed by Adif Alta Velocidad, represents an investment of 557 million euros and will allow the capacity of high-speed trains and user areas to be doubled. The refurbishment is being carried out in phases to keep the station fully operational, in a context of constant growth in demand, with 44.4 million passengers in 2024.

The expansion also aims at a comprehensive improvement of the traveller experience, with larger, brighter and more accessible spaces. In recent months, new square metres of concourse have been opened, access points have been reorganised and an underpass has been enabled to connect the platforms with Cercanías services. These actions, financed with NextGenerationEU funds, reinforce Chamartín’s role as a key rail transport hub and the prelude to its future full transformation.
