Lanzarote strengthens its leadership in sustainability with Carta +30

11 February, 2026

Lanzarote once again takes the lead in the international tourism debate by renewing its commitment to sustainability through Carta +30, the roadmap that will shape the island’s model in the coming years. Thirty years after adopting the first World Charter for Sustainable Tourism, the president of the Island Council of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Oswaldo Betancort, defends a clear approach: the tourism destination cannot be developed in isolation from the territory, the culture or the community that inhabits it.

For Betancort, sustainability in Lanzarote has never been a slogan, but a cross‑cutting vision applied to planning, land management and public policies. The island, an international benchmark since 1995, has opted to regulate growth, protect the landscape and balance tourism activity with social wellbeing. In this context, he underlines that overtourism is not combated with speeches, but with data, planning and bold decisions that prioritise the general interest and residents’ quality of life.

Carta +30 introduces new principles such as regeneration, social justice and the recognition of limits, aligned with a strategy that seeks not to grow in volume, but in quality. Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Betancort says, seek to improve the tourism experience, social return and respect for the territory, consolidating a model based on restraint, governance and a shared vision for the future.
