Ferry routes consolidate flexible getaways by sea

15 April, 2026

Ferry travel is strengthening its position as a flexible alternative for those looking to visit several destinations in a single trip, with greater freedom to adapt routes, timings and experiences.

Maritime transport is gaining prominence among European and Spanish travellers who opt for short breaks and more open itineraries. According to Ferryscanner, ferries allow itineraries to be modified and destinations to be linked with greater flexibility than other means of transport.

One of the keys to this trend is the possibility of boarding with a vehicle, a decisive factor for lovers of independent travel. In the last year, 66% of domestic journeys have included a car, enabling greater autonomy at the destination.

Multi-route trips are also on the rise, with two- and three-leg itineraries that turn the journey into part of the experience. The phenomenon of island hopping is also gaining ground.

The Balearics concentrate a large part of demand with routes such as Ibiza-Formentera, Barcelona-Palma and Valencia-Ibiza, reinforcing ferries as a tool for personalised island-to-island travel.
