Spain capitalises on the eclipse as a tourism and gastronomic draw

10 June, 2026

Spain is positioning itself as a destination to observe the total solar eclipse on 12 August, a phenomenon that is already bringing forward travel and consumption decisions in the hospitality sector.

According to data from CoverManager, restaurant bookings for that day are increasing by up to 880% in the regions with the greatest visibility of the eclipse. Galicia is leading the growth, with an increase of 1,800%, followed by Castilla y León, with 1,150%.

The early demand breaks with the usual habits in the restaurant trade, where most bookings are made less than a week in advance. In this case, users are planning a table with a logic more typical of accommodation or transport.

The phenomenon is also boosting tourism products linked to science, heritage and gastronomy, as well as cruises and charter flights aimed at “eclipse chasers”.

The expected impact confirms the potential of the event: a report drawn up for Airbnb estimates 327,000 additional travellers in rural municipalities and associated tourism spending of 362 million euros.
