La Boqueria aims to become a World Heritage Site

12 August, 2026

La Boqueria wants to turn its everyday history into universal heritage. The Barcelona market has submitted, together with Nishiki in Kyoto and San Lorenzo in Florence, a candidacy to Unesco that seeks to protect not only its building, inaugurated in 1840, but also the stallholders’ trade, the culture of fresh produce and the direct relationship with the customer.

The nomination dossier, led by Jordi Mas and backed by Barcelona City Council and the Spanish ambassador to Unesco, focuses on intangible heritage threatened by commercial homogenisation. The candidacy is based on knowledge passed on through the market: how to recognise seasonal produce, choose a piece of fruit, buy fish or find the right cut of meat.

Its international profile, however, raises the challenge of balancing tourist numbers with local life. The increase in visitors has reduced the presence of local shoppers and encouraged an offering more geared towards immediate consumption.

To preserve its essence, stalls must devote at least 40% of their surface area to fresh produce. Moreover, the new entrance via Plaça de la Gardunya aims to redistribute flows and ease congestion on La Rambla, while the candidacy moves towards a possible decision between 2028 and 2029.
