Nine trail‑running routes to discover a cooler side of Spain

9 September, 2026

Spain offers alternatives for those who want to combine holidays and sport even in summer. Forests, lakes, rivers and high‑mountain routes make it possible to go trail running with more shade or at higher altitude, while discovering some of the country’s great natural areas.

The selection includes nine routes ranging from 12 to 30 kilometres. In the north, Peña Ubiña in Asturias, Collados del Asón in Cantabria and the Irati Forest in Navarre stand out, where the route crosses one of the largest beech forests in Europe.

In the Aragonese Pyrenees, the route to Ibón de Plan combines forests and a lake surrounded by peaks, while Monte Pindo, in Galicia, allows you to run with panoramic views over the Atlantic.

Andalusia concentrates four options: Sierra Nevada, with high‑mountain itineraries; Los Cahorros de Monachil, among gorges, suspension bridges and riverside paths; and the sierras of Grazalema and de las Nieves, both with Spanish fir forests.

Before setting off it is advisable to check the weather forecast, download the GPS route and carry enough water.
