The pandemic puts Gran Canaria in vogue as a golf destination

15 June, 2022

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a whole host of adverse effects on tourism, but there have been some upsides too. One such positive is that some activities have received an enormous boost thanks to being largely unaffected by health restrictions, with golf a prime example. Golfing destinations, such as Gran Canaria, have benefitted in turn.

“Golf tourism is an important part of our destination offer thanks to the privileged climate, perfect for golf, that we enjoy all year round” explained the Tourism Minister Carlos Álamo, who also noted that in recent years the number of federation licenses in the rest of Europe has grown significantly.

This is directly related to the pandemic, with golf being “one of the first sports allowed to return without restrictions due to being an outdoor exercise with distance between participants”, he pointed out. In fact, in the 2021-2022 season, there has been an increase in the number of ‘green fees’ sold in Gran Canaria.
