Spain has a plan to promote gourmet food and wine
27 July, 2022The Spanish Government has presented the National Tourism Plan for Food and Wine 2022-2023, featuring an investment of more than 68.6 million euros and which promotes food and wine tourism as an experience to position Spain as an international tourist destination and uses it as a tool for international competitiveness.
This plan, presented in July, is committed to promoting "recognisable elements of our country, where, in addition, food and wine tourism represents the coming together of two of our strengths in the form of gastronomy and oenology, both with enormous capacity for growth", commented Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Reyes Maroto.
The growing importance of gourmet food and wine tourism in all destinations, as well as the volume, quality and prestige of the gastronomy and oenology sector in Spain, "seem like obvious reasons for making wine and food national priorities in 2022 while presenting the possibility, in addition, of aligning all the actions for the transformation of the sector with a view to the new tourism model that we are designing based on quality, new products and experiences”, he added.
According to data from Turespaña, cultural tourism, which encompasses gastronomic tourism in the broad sense, is the third most important category of tourism in the country, coming in after beach tourism and other types of leisure. In 2019, 2 out of 10 tourists who visited Spain took part in gastronomic or wine-related activities. Of these, 42% stated that cultural tourism was the main reason for their trip.
