Ibiza and Formentera to be connected by an electric ferry

21 September, 2022

Spain’s first electric passenger and cargo ferry with zero emissions during stays and port visits, Cap de Barbaria, will be launched on 28 September at the Armón docks in Vigo. This Baleària vessel will cover the Ibiza-Formentera route with an eco-efficient and sustainable journey.

It will be able to transport 14 lorries and 350 passengers with very low energy consumption, and without emitting polluting gases in port thanks to its battery-powered electric propulsion. The Cap de Barbaria vessel will have the lowest consumption and emissions of the company’s fleet, while maintaining the cargo capacity required for the route.

It will also be prepared to become a test laboratory for the use of green hydrogen in the future. The vessel is 82 metres long and 15.5 metres wide and will be able to sail at up to 14 knots. As for the passenger area, priority has been given to outdoor spaces focused on the summer market.
