Olive pits to propel flights departing from Seville

4 January, 2023

The 220 Air Europa, Air Nostrum, Iberia Express, Ryanair, Vueling and Wizz Air flights which departed the first week of December from Seville Airport were powered by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and covered 400,000 kilometres of flight an average aircraft, the equivalent of going around the world ten times, between 400 and 500 flight hours.

This initiative by the airline industry and CEPSA has prevented the emission of 200 tonnes of CO₂, equivalent to planting 2,500 trees. SAF has allowed the planes of these six airlines to take off from the Seville terminal with a 4.5% SAF in their reservoirs, exceeding the 2% target established by the European Union for 2025.

Likewise, the initiative also supports several of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda: SDG 7 (Affordable and clean energy), SDG 8 (Decent work and economic growth), SDG 12 (Responsible consumption and production) and SDG 13 (Climate action). The fuel is produced by CEPSA at its La Rábida Energy Park, in Huelva, from olive pits and other vegetable waste from the olive sector in Spain.
