La Gomera pushes wine tourism with the oldest grape in Europe
11 January, 2023The Forastera grape and wine from the terraces are set up as an element generating great expectations for sustainable tourism from the environmental and social point of view which characterises La Gomera in the Canaries. Turismo de Canarias, alongside the Cabildo de La Gomera and the University of La Laguna are promoting the training, conservation of traditions and enhancement of a unique local product and which can be a great prescriptive element of the Gomeran tourist destination.
The island's viticultural model, through a differentiated and high-value product, is framed in a landscape formed by man since the 15th century and a characteristic grape, the Forastera, considered one of the oldest vines of Europe. For this, La Gomera aspires to occupy an outstanding role in the map of Spanish and European regions of heroic viticulture.
The strategy being developed on the island “keeps our rural areas alive and diversifies our economic model, while attracting 21st century tourists. Tourists who seek a unique experience in their travels, who yearn to integrate into the local community and learn about and consume its products because what moves and inspires them is that their trips are productive and that it not only benefits them but also the society of the place they visit”, said the Minister of Tourism, Industry and Trade of the Government of the Canaries, Yaiza Castilla.
