The 3 best villages for tourism in Spain according to UNWTO
5 April, 2023A total of 32 villages from 18 countries have been designated by the UNWTO as the “best villages for tourism”. This award granted by the World Tourism Organisation is a recognition of “rural destinations which make tourism an engine for development and new employment and income opportunities, while preserving and promoting the values and products of the community.”
The award also recognises municipalities “for their commitment to innovation and sustainability in all aspects (economic, social and environmental) and for tourism development in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”. The ceremony took place at the end of February highlighting three Spanish villages: Rupit (Barcelona), Alquézar (Huesca) and Guadalupe (Cáceres).
As explained by the UNWTO, the villages chosen for the award were assessed by an independent advisory board which judged a set of criteria: cultural and natural resources, promotion and conservation of cultural resources, economic, social and environmental sustainability, tourism development and value chain integration, governance and prioritisation of tourism, infrastructures and connectivity and health and safety.
