The new UNWTO headquarters will be in a palace in Madrid
3 May, 2023In April, the Council of Ministers of Spain authorised the remodelling and expansion of building B of the Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones de Madrid, destined to become the new headquarters of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), with an estimated value of 24.6 million euros.
The project consists of a complete interior reconfiguration of the existing volume to adapt it to new uses. Also, a third additional floor will be built with new structural elements that will rest on the existing ones. A contemporary architectural language is sought, which clearly but discreetly differs from the mural designed by Joan Miró. The deck will have skylights to facilitate natural lighting.

It should be remembered that in March 2022, an international administrative agreement was signed between Spain and the UNWTO whereby Spain handed over building B of the Palacio de Congresos (unused since 2012) to the UNWTO for 75 years and took on its renovation.
