25 new high-end hotels for Extremadura within two years
7 June, 2023The Spanish region of Extremadura is seeing significant growth in its tourist offer and also in the volume of visitors it receives. As proof of this, we just need to highlight the opening of a total of 25 hotel establishments (as well as luxury flats) between 2021 and 2022. In 2022, 1.8 million visitors were registered in the community with 3,593,000 overnight stays, slightly more than in 2019.
Extremadura's target is to reach 2.5 million visitors by the middle of this decade and 3 million by the end of the decade. “Previously, the main destinations in Extremadura were the World Heritage cities, such as Mérida, Badajoz and Plasencia, as well as Trujillo and Zafra but now it is the whole community,” said the director general of Tourism, Francisco Martín on the evolution that this region is experiencing.
And, he clarified this by pointing out that in the period 2012 to 2022 alone, 25 new 4 and 5-star accommodations opened, with 727 beds and 206 workers, the vast majority of which (90%) are in rural areas. What’s more “there’s a real fever of tourist apartments” which are “fundamentally centred in the cities”, especially in Mérida and Plasencia.
