Is Spain on the verge of another record year for tourism?

21 June, 2023

In April, Spain welcomed 7.2 million international tourists, 18.5% more than the same month of 2022 and 1.2% more than in April 2019. These figures represent an all-time record in terms of number of visitors and expenditure: 8,480 million euros, 22.7% more than a year ago and 20.2% more than the best pre-Pandemic figure, according to data published today by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

In the first four months of the year, Spain welcomed almost 21 million people, a growth of 32.4% compared to last year; during this four-month period, total expenditure has been 25,681 million euros, 36.6% more than in the same period last year and 14.5% higher than in 2019.

For the Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism (the body to which Turespaña belongs), Héctor Gómez, “these are extraordinary figures that demonstrate, once again, that Spain is at the forefront of world tourism, that the tourism recovery is complete and that the Government's policies are working, both those relating to specialised, quality employment and aid for the modernisation of the sector, are bearing fruit.”
