Meliá will manage an iconic hotel in Barcelona with a new identity

9 August, 2023

Meliá Hotels International will open the Palau de Congressos de Catalonia in October this year and has set January 2024 as the target date for the reopening of the adjoining hotel, formerly known as Rey Juan Carlos I, which will be renamed Miranda de Pedralbes. It will be a Gran Meliá transformed into a benchmark urban resort-destination.

The chain made this announcement after it was announced that Meliá Hotels International will be able to manage the Hotel Juan Carlos I, after the 11th Commercial Court of that city, has supported the owner, Barcelona Projects, who asked for an early termination of the current management contract.

So the court rejected Fairmont’s demand to keep the hotel, which has been closed since 2020. The court ruling would give the green light to the new project, entrusted by the new owner and the investor Tyrus Capital, to Meliá Hotels International, so that the hotel will take over the management of the establishment and the Conference Centre that is part of the complex.
