Spain, one of the countries with most World Heritage Sites

18 October, 2023

Spain is one of the countries in the world that occupies a more distinguished place among those with the most World Heritage Sites. Specifically, it is fifth in the world ranking, behind Italy, China, Germany and France, and ahead of others that stand out for their great history, such as India, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Romania and Iran.

This is indicated by the most recent data published by UNESCO last September, which reveals that Spain has a total of 50 World Heritage Sites, only one less than France and two less than Germany, while China, with its millenary culture, has 57, and Italy 58. Conversely, India has 42.

Spain is thus in a very relevant position in terms of the availability of World Heritage sites that can be visited by international tourists arriving each year. These include the Mosque of Cordoba; the Alhambra, Generalife and Albaicín in Granada; the Cathedral of Burgos; the old city of Santiago de Compostela, the biodiversity of Ibiza and even works by Gaudí.
