The Spanish AVE consolidates its pet-friendly project

18 October, 2023

Renfe celebrates its first year of transporting dogs up to 40kg on certain AVE trains. Since the start of the Large Pet Project on 12 September 2022 and after its definitive implementation on 9 June, nearly 1,800 “large” dogs have already been transported on some of the company’s trains.

Renfe’s large dog Friendly Transport Service is available on certain AVE trains on the Madrid-Barcelona (with a stop in Zaragoza), Madrid-Málaga, Madrid-Alicante and Madrid-Valencia lines. The same conditions are maintained: one dog is allowed of up to 40 kilos per passenger, with a maximum of two animals per train, in a single carriage and always in a fixed space with two specific seats.

This premise does not condition the number of pets weighing less than 10 kilos that travel in a carrier on the train, where guinea pigs, hamsters and rabbits have also recently been included among the pets admitted, thus reinforcing Renfe’s commitment to pet travel.
