Spanish high-speed trains beat their passenger record
1 November, 2023According to the latest data from the Spanish National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC), Spanish high-speed trains have set their historical record with 8.32 million passengers (+33%) in the second quarter of the year in all corridors with two or more operators competing in prices and services (Renfe, Avlo, Ouigo and Iryo).
The figure does not include Avant (High-Speed Mid Distance) services, a market operated only by Renfe, which carried 3.3 million passengers (+57%). As well as boosting demand, the presence of several operators in the market led to a reduction in prices.
Between April and June, one million passengers used the Madrid-Seville corridor (+30.3%) and the Madrid-Malaga/Granada corridor (+25.8% year-on-year), respectively. The Madrid-Alicante corridor exceeded 750,000 passengers (+32.1%), and that of Madrid-Valencia almost doubled the number of passengers in the same quarter of 2022 (+86%), to 1.3 million passengers. Madrid-Barcelona recorded 3.6 million (+36%) travellers.
