8 November, 2023

In the framework of the 25th WTO Assembly held in Samarkand (Uzbekistan) in mid-October, the Committee on Statistics, which is co-chaired by Spain (through Turespaña) and Austria, has ratified the draft of the draft statistical framework for Measuring Sustainability in Tourism (MST).

This latest version of the draft has been submitted to the plenary of the Assembly for approval and, after a final global consultation process, to the United Nations Statistical Commission, which will meet in New York in March 2024, for ratification as a UN standard.

In 2016 WTO launched the initiative for the approval of a statistical framework for the Measurement of Sustainability in Tourism (MST). The objective is to achieve a statistical framework to measure the role of tourism in sustainable development, including the economic, environmental and social dimensions, i.e. to measure the impacts and dependencies of tourism on the economy, society and the environment.
