The Best Monument of the World 2023 is in Spain

8 November, 2023

Gaudí’s El Capricho was the only Spanish winner of this year’s Remarkable Venue Awards, which are presented by Tiqets to honour the best museums, attractions and experiences in eight countries around the world. The winners were chosen by a popular vote in which more than 50,000 people participated between 18 September and 3 October.

Gaudí’s El Capricho was awarded Best Monument in the World 2023 at a ceremony held in Seville as part of the Tourism Innovation Summit (TIS). The Villa Quijano, popularly known as El Capricho, is a modernist building located in the town of Comillas (Cantabria), designed by the iconic architect Antoni Gaudí and built between 1883 and 1885.

This project belongs to Gaudí’s Orientalist period (1883-1888), a period in which the architect produced a series of works with a markedly Oriental taste, inspired by the art of the Near and Far East (India, Persia and Japan), as well as by Hispanic Islamic art, mainly Mudejar and Nasrid. Gaudí made extensive use of ceramic tile decoration, as well as mitered arches, exposed brick gussets and temple or dome-shaped finials.
