Spain stands out, among many other reasons, for having a large number of castles distributed throughout the country. According to data from the Spanish Association of Friends of Castles, there are 10,000, with Aragon, Andalusia and Castile-La Mancha being the regions with the most fortresses.

National Geographic has compiled a list of the most beautiful castles in Europe. Among all of them, one stands out, located in Spain, which it has considered to be the most beautiful in Europe. This is the Alcázar of Segovia. The prestigious magazine considers its most important element to be the keep but also praises the “conical” domes of its turrets. They “mark out its unmistakable silhouette”, it says on its website.

Built in the 12th century and located above the Eresma valley, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985. As for its history, it was the site of the signing of the Concordia de Segovia document, which was key to the formation of the Spanish nation. It also hosted other events such as the first flight for military purposes, which marked the beginning of military aviation, or the wedding between Philip II and Anne of Austria.
