AENA activates the Winter Plan to deal with contingencies at 21 airports

13 December, 2023

Aena’s ‘Winter Action Plan for ice and snow contingencies’, better known as the Winter Plan, has been active since 1 November at the 21 airports in the network that are at risk of suffering adverse weather conditions over the coming months.

In this Plan, Aena establishes the procedures to be followed by airports in the event of this type of contingency with the aim of minimising the impact of ice and snow on air traffic at airports, where the priority at all times is safety.

For a proper application of the Winter Plan, the procedures are regularly updated, the machinery and technical means are periodically reviewed and the personnel involved receive continuous training, which is intensified in the period prior to the arrival of the winter season.

The airports included in the Winter Plan are: Albacete, Asturias, Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, Bilbao, Burgos, Girona-Costa Brava, Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén, Huesca-Pirineos, León, Logroño-Agoncillo, Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, Madrid-Cuatro Vientos, Palma de Mallorca, Pamplona, Salamanca, San Sebastián, Seve Ballesteros-Santander, Santiago-Rosalía de Castro, Valladolid, Vitoria and Zaragoza.
