9 sculptors model Christmas on Las Palmas beach
20 December, 2023The well-known Belén de Arena [Sand Nativity] of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, opened its doors in early December, after being modelled by 9 sculptors from 5 countries. The work of the artists, who are in charge of giving life to one of the icons of Christmas in the city and the island, can be followed by the public from the Paseo de Las Canteras.
The popular Christmas card of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Belén de Arena de Las Canteras, which occupies almost 3,000 m2 and uses more than 2,000 tonnes of sand. In 2022, 151,000 visitors visited the Sand Nativity. Tourists enjoying the city at this time of year enjoy this artistic display based on religious tradition.
The councillor for Tourism, Pedro Quevedo, explained that the Nativity Scene has spent “18 years proving its attractiveness from an artistic and tourist point of view, but also socially. It has become an obligatory meeting point for citizens in a privileged space such as Las Canteras beach”.
