Renfe will produce solar energy to move its trains

20 December, 2023

Renfe is the first consumer of electricity in Spain whose origin is 100% renewable and certified. It also has ‘Carbon Neutral’ certification, awarded by AENOR, for all electric trains, both passenger and freight, which highlights its commitment to sustainability and its aim to be more efficient in the use of electric traction energy.

Renfe is also committed to the installation of photovoltaic plants to supply trains and workshops with sustainable energy. Specifically, progress is being made on a pilot project to be located in Olmedo (Valladolid) to produce its own solar electricity. In turn, Renfe has reduced its carbon footprint for each unit transported by 89% compared to 1990.

This is 20 to 30 times less than the emissions of its direct competitors, such as air and road transport. Renfe is looking to the future with the objective of reaching zero carbon emissions by 2050. The company is also a member of the European business initiative to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and of the Spanish Green Growth Group (GECV).
