The stone labyrinth you can visit in Menorca
21 February, 2024There is a very special corner in Menorca. This is an extraordinary asset that arose after the restoration of the old Pedreres de s’Hostal, a limestone quarry that, instead of disappearing under the rubble of time, has been transformed into an impressive place to visit. It is called Lithica, and it is part of a private, non-profit foundation that was founded in 1994.
Located very close to Ciutadella, it stands as a monument to the island’s mining history, which was once centred on the extraction of stone for the construction of the island’s white buildings. Lithica is considered a magical place where stone tells its own story.
Its walls still bear traces of the hard work of the men who extracted the limestone rock from the quarry and gave life to the first artistic outline of this amazing place The quarry was worked by hand from the 19th century until well into the 20th century.
