Tenerife hotels convert 1,200 tonnes of waste into compost
17 April, 2024Tenerife's hotel employers' association, Ashotel, and the farmers' and livestock farmers' association Asaga Canarias have presented the results of 'Comunidades Turísticas Circulares', a project that will be two years old in April and has so far transformed 1,200 tonnes of bio and pruning waste into 400 tonnes of compost.
For now, the platform has 17 hotels on the island participating in the initiative, as well as another 215 partner hotels, with the hotel association assuring that its capacity for growth is ‘infinite’ and for this reason it is now focusing its interest on Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava, Arona and the metropolitan area.
During the presentation of the results, Ashotel assured that the ‘input’ generated by the hotels in Tenerife would result in the best quality compost in Europe, which is why this organic material would have a certificate, specifically the so-called type A certificate. As a result, hotel waste is regenerated in the form of fruit and vegetables via a circular economy process.
