Campsites and rural accommodation are trendy in Spain

n March, overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation in Spain increased by 31.4% to 9.24 million, driven mainly by the growth recorded in campsites and rural tourism accommodation. The monthly survey of the National Statistics Institute (INE) has confirmed that the average stay was 4 overnight stays per traveller.

Overnight stays by residents increased by 63.7% and those by non-residents by 14.6%. In March, the occupancy rate in tourist apartments was 33.6% of the places offered, 1.7% more than in 2023. Non-residents accounted for 72.8% of overnight stays, with the UK being the main source market, with 29.8% of the total.

The Canary Islands was the preferred destination in apartments, with over 2.4 million overnight stays and an increase of 9.4% compared to March 2023. It also had the highest occupancy, with 84.8% of the apartments on offer. By tourist areas, the island of Tenerife is in first place, with over 802 thousand overnight stays and Lanzarote had the highest occupancy rate for apartments (88%).
