The must-see 18th century British fortress in Menorca

26 June, 2024

Among the many experiences that can be enjoyed in Menorca, a visit to Fort Marlborough, in Cala San Esteban, which has recently undergone a refurbishment of the wooden structures that support the cannons, stands out. The work has been based on the plans used in the initial museological conservation at the beginning of the 20th century.

This fortification was a base built by the British army between 1720 and 1726. Alongside the castle of San Felipe and the tower of Stuart or d'en Penjat, it served to protect the entrance to the port of Mahón, one of the most coveted in the western Mediterranean by the powers of the time.

The exhibition montage is a must-see, which, supported by technology, places the visitor in the era of the sieges of the Fort of Marlborough and explains the history of both Menorca and Europe throughout the turbulent 18th century. The views from the upper enclosure are among the most popular with history lovers visiting Menorca.
