Tourist stays are longer than before the pandemic

3 July, 2024

Among the trends that can be seen in tourism this year are an increase in the length of stay of travellers and greater spending on experiential tourism, according to the conclusions of Mastercard’s 'Travel Industry Trends 2024' report, which has analysed the evolution of travel in 74 countries over the last year and the patterns for this year.

The latest edition of the annual study, from the Mastercard Economic Institute, analyses developments in tourist movements in 2024 and includes an analysis of the preferred destinations in Europe for the summer months using data from July and August 2023. It also draws comparisons with pre-pandemic data.

Globally, tourists spend on average one more day on holiday in 2024 compared to 2020. In the case of Europe and the Middle East and Africa, this figure is closer to two nights. In Spain it is even higher, having increased by almost 2.5 days on average, from an average of 3.5 days in 2020 to six days in 2024.
