The Canaries improve their positioning as a sports tourism destination
7 August, 2024In 2023, a total of 120,000 tourists, including sports lovers and companions, came to the Canary Islands for sports training, an activity that had an estimated economic impact of €160 million. In order to promote the archipelago as a destination for this type of traveller, the authorities have launched a new strategy to coincide with the Paris Olympic Games.
Sports tourism is therefore an important element in the diversification strategy of the Canary Islands. In addition to the economic impact of sporting events, last year Canary Islands Tourism spent €2.8 million sponsoring 24 events.
“The unique climatic and natural characteristics of the archipelago, as well as the facilities recognised by the world’s leading organisations, the sports recovery centres and the excellent accommodation offer make us the ideal destination for professional sports training,” says Jéssica de León, Canary Islands Government Minister for Tourism and Employment.
