Promoting local commerce in the tourist centre of Barcelona

21 August, 2024

Barcelona City Council has launched a pilot project in the most touristic area of the Catalan capital’s centre, Ciutat Vella, to promote local products and shops and has done so with the collaboration of hotels. To this end, a catalogue has been drawn up of businesses that “are significant for being sustainable, representative of local talent and have a desire for social impact”.

Specifically, the catalogue includes food shops, shoe shops, jewellery shops, bookshops, and souvenir shops made in the city itself. In total, 34 establishments have been added so far, and the list is available via a QR code that the hotels place in an area where their guests can see it.

The plan’s ultimate aim is to ensure that the economic impact generated by tourism has a positive impact on the flagship commercial initiatives and that their unique products reach more people. It is also an opportunity for hotels to get involved in the economic development of the territory and to become prescribers of initiatives that “bring life to the neighbourhoods”.
