Spain extends its list of World Heritage Sites

28 August, 2024

At the 46th annual committee meeting of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco), held in New Delhi (India) in July, new locations have been declared World Heritage Sites. Among the 24 new nominations included are the prehistoric sites of 'talayotic' (prehistoric) Menorca.

As a result, Spain has a total of 50 Heritage Sites, leading among Spanish-speaking countries and ranking fifth in the world. These include the Mosque of Cordoba; the Alhambra, Generalife and Albaicín in Granada; the Cathedral of Burgos; the old city of Santiago de Compostela, the biodiversity of Ibiza and even works by Gaudí.

It should be noted that Unesco awards the distinction of World Heritage to properties with characteristics of exceptional value that make them unique in the world. Currently, the list contains around 1,200 sites spread across 166 countries, but there is some disparity, with some countries having more than 50 sites and others having none at all.
