What is the weight of the British package holiday market in Spain?

11 September, 2024

The organisation of trips on an individual basis continues to gain importance among the main outbound markets, but package holidays maintain a significant weight in some of them, as is the case of the United Kingdom, according to the information gathered in the “Studies of outbound tourism markets” prepared by Turespaña, which confirms that it remains the main outbound market for tourists to Spain.

In 2023, 17.2 million travellers arrived from the UK, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE), representing 20.3% of total international arrivals. Spain is one of the Brits’ favourite destinations. According to the ONS (Office for National Statistics), Spain’s share of total foreign travel last year was 20.7%, followed by France with 10.6% and Italy with 5.7%.

As regards the organisation of their holidays, British tourists have traditionally organised their holidays through tour operators, but nowadays, in many cases, they do so independently, for convenience, speed, price or a feeling of fulfilment and self-sufficiency, not forgetting the wide range of tourism products and services on the Internet, according to the Turespaña analysis.
