The Canaries explain their sustainability roadmap to UN Tourism
25 September, 2024The Canary Islands have proposed that by 2026 all tourism products on the islands will report their carbon footprint. As explained by the Regional Minister of Tourism and Employment, Jéssica de León, and the Managing Director of Canary Islands Tourism, José Juan Lorenzo, during their intervention at the meeting of the United Nations Committee on Tourism and Sustainability (CTD) in September in Costa Rica.
“Environmental sustainability is one of the priorities of Canary Islands Tourism,” said Lorenzo. During her speech, the minister stressed the need to “think about the benefit of the residents and the choice of tourists who respect the territory”. De León stressed that the main challenge for the Canary Islands as a destination is to understand sustainability from a social point of view, which implies real benefits for the local population.
She also stressed the importance of its environmental aspect. The Canary archipelago has adhered to the Glasgow Declaration since 2022 and was the first destination in Spain to have a Climate Action Plan to reduce CO2 emissions.
