3 new corridors for private train operators in Spain
13 November, 2024Renfe will no longer have a monopoly on three more corridors following the completion of the second phase of passenger rail liberalisation. Specifically, Adif has launched a framework capacity offer on the lines linking Madrid with Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Cádiz and Huelva “to reach 70% of the population” with up to 72 daily services.
The new phase opens up more routes for both Ouigo and iryo, as they await the terms of a process that is expected to be completed in 2026. In the first quarter of 2025, Adif will publish the timetable of the process and the rules for its development according to “objective, transparent and non-discriminatory” criteria, which will also maximise the use of the railway network.
In this second phase, the possibility of formalising multi-annual framework agreements between Adif and the railway companies is proposed in order to provide greater legal certainty and facilitate optimal planning of timetables and operations.
