Spanish ski resorts break records for investment in improvements
20 November, 2024Spanish ski resorts have made a record investment in modernisation and improvement of their infrastructures, with €75 million in the 2023-2024 season, surpassing the €74.1M spent by all resorts in the previous period. This has been highlighted in statements to the media by the president of the Association of Ski and Mountain Resorts of Spain (ATUDEM), Jesús Ibáñez.
According to the sector spokesman, of the total, €2.7 M were allocated to ski lifts, another €9.4 M to the slopes and the remaining €43.9 M are divided between digitalisation, car parks, activities, competition material, hotels and restaurants. By resorts, Sierra Nevada was the leader (€43 M), followed by Baqueira (€9.6 M) and La Molina (€4.77 M).
As for the evolution of the number of visitors, the representative of the resorts pointed to a stabilisation after the upturn achieved in 2021-2022, when snow tourism was considered compatible with the health restrictions of the pandemic. On that occasion, the number of visitors reached 5.9 million, some 100,000 more than in the previous record period of 2017-2018.
