AVE grows by 17.2% and exceeds 3.7 million passengers in March

4 June, 2025

The High Speed train continues to gain ground as an option for long-distance journeys in Spain. In March, more than 3.7 million passengers used services such as Renfe, Ouigo and iryo, representing an increase of 17.2% compared to the same month in 2024, according to the latest data from the National Statistics Institute (INE).

This growth places High Speed above domestic air transport, which only grew by 0.1% and registered 3.9 million passengers. Overall, Long Distance rail reached 4.4 million users, an increase of 11.1%. However, other rail transport segments showed declines, such as Cercanías (-2.8%) and Media Distancia [Medium Distancia] (-6.3%), leading to a 2.2% decrease in total intercity rail.

AVE’s growth is part of a generally positive context for public transport, which exceeded 508.8 million users in March (+8.4%). The dynamism of High Speed confirms its strategic impact on national connectivity and its growing preference among travellers.
