Six water-based hiking routes for this summer in Spain
27 August, 2025Hiking is gaining ground as a summer alternative to sun and beach tourism. According to EscapadaRural, more and more travellers are choosing short, fresh circular routes that combine nature and water. These getaways allow you to enjoy lakes, waterfalls or swimming holes without having to travel far, and without presenting any physical demands.
The preferred routes are between 5 and 10 kilometres long, of low difficulty and run alongside rivers or lakes. Six itineraries are particularly notable for their environment and accessibility:
- Three waterfalls of Ardonés (Cerler, Huesca): a Pyrenean route with waterfalls and fresh air.
- Saliencia Lakes (Somiedo, Asturias): 8 km route between glacial lakes in a protected area.
- Río Chíllar (Nerja, Málaga): walk along the river between canyons and natural pools.
- Lakes of Lloroza (Fuente Dé, Cantabria): 4 km with high mountain views, ideal for families.
- Belabarce waterfall and Ibón Cave (Isaba, Navarre): Pyrenean valley with natural heritage.
- Gorg de Santa Margarida (Girona): short route, very popular with families in search of swimming pools.

EscapadaRural stresses the importance of planning, avoiding the hottest times of day and respecting the natural environment for a safe and sustainable experience.
