Brits are the primary tourist market travelling to Spain in 2022

16 March, 2022

In January, Spain recovered to 60% of pre-pandemic levels for international tourists arriving during the same month in 2020. The nearly 2.5 million foreign visitors are more than five times the number of tourists that arrived from abroad in January 2021, while the total expenditure of their trips grew by 561.7% compared to a year ago.

This is shown by data published in March by the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE), which revealed the United Kingdom as the main source market for tourism to Spain, largely thanks to the relaxation of health requirements for travel between the two countries. The 363,150 tourists who arrived in January represent an increase of 1,461.3% over the same month last year.

The Canary Islands is the main destination for arrivals, with 30.6% of international tourists, followed by Catalonia (18.6%) and Andalusia (13%). Travellers who choose the Canary Islands are mainly British and German; in Catalonia, they come from France and other European countries; and in Andalusia, they are primarily British and Dutch.
