Tourists can now stargaze from the highest point in La Palma

8 June, 2022

Municipal authorities on the island of la Palma have inaugurated a brand-new Visitor Centre at the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory, considered by the scientific community to be one of the best in the world.

The centre is situated in an enviable location, set amongst a unique landscape at 2,400 metres high, which guarantees the best conditions for observing the sky and stargazing. The incredibly advantageous nature of this location is further proven by the installation of some of the world’s most important telescopes in the immediate vicinity of the Observatory.

Visitors will be able to enjoy an intimate experience lived through the expert telescopes located inside the Observatory. The initiative aims to foster the Further economic recovery of Tourism and the wider economy in La Palma after the devastating volcanic eruption in 2022.

Facilities include three exposition galleries: the first one providing a window out to the universe, where La Palma’s unique features in the world of astronomic observation are explained while the second gallery features an explanation of humankind’s current knowledge of the universe. The third gallery takes visitors on a journey through the natural environment surrounding the centre.
