Interest in the blue economy and ocean sustainability grows in Spain

15 June, 2022

The International Maritime Fair (FIMAR) 2022, recently held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, closed its eleventh edition with confirmation of the strength of the blue economy: 16,717 visitors attended the event, which was held in the Muelle Santa Catalina area for the first time, restoring in-person attendance after the pandemic as well as the development of an extensive educational and informative programme.

Almost 60 exhibitors were actively present at this year’s FIMAR, which paid special attention to surfing and water sports as potential vectors of blue economic development in the region. Participating in the fair were four town councils established as venues for major international events and competitions: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Gáldar, Santa Lucía de Tirajana and La Aldea de San Nicolás, with the support of the Gran Canaria Island Council.

As an indicator of success, it’s worth noting that companies in the nautical sector increased their sales by an average of 50% compared to previous editions. The International Maritime Fair is promoted by the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council, the Gran Canaria Island Council, and the Port Authority of Las Palmas. It’s organised by the Ciudad de Mar City Council and the Canary Islands Trade Fair Institution (INFECAR).
