The first 100% sustainable flight takes to the skies over Spain

15 June, 2022

Air Europa’s most sustainable flight took to the skies on 6 May between Madrid and Gran Canaria with a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, in response to the SkyTeam alliance’s challenge to its member airlines. To get things off the ground, the airline purchased biofuel produced from vegetable oil at the Petronor refinery in Bilbao.

The aircraft used, with a capacity for 339 passengers, is one of the most efficient models on the market, capable of reducing both emissions and fuel consumption by 20% thanks to its aerodynamics and cutting-edge innovative technology. The Boeing 787-9 further reduced its sound emissions by 60%, significantly lowering noise pollution in towns and cities near airports.

The flight also included a more sustainable ground procedure, with the handling company using state-of-the-art vehicles for all ground operations. In addition, continuous climb and descent procedures were established, as well as the most optimal trajectory for efficient fuel consumption and, therefore, a significant reduction of CO2 emissions.

On board, Air Europa used biodegradable materials – a prelude to the progressive full roll-out of a “zero plastic on board” system – and also implemented correct waste segregation. During the flight, a sustainable and healthy menu was offered, made with seasonal and zero-kilometre products, ensuring total care for the environment and promoting the circular economy.
