6% more air traffic controllers at Spanish airports this summer
22 June, 2022Travel activity is on the rise this summer and, as a result, the Spanish authorities are reinforcing the number of air traffic controllers operating throughout the Spanish airport network, which has grown by 6% compared to 2019. This is what is being reported by Enaire, the body in charge of air navigation in the country.
According to the data, by type of flight, this summer there will be an expected 92% in domestic flights, 91% in overflights (flights with no origin or destination in Spanish airports), and 89% in international journeys. Hence the importance of having more controllers to help manage all this traffic.
Before the pandemic, Enaire had a total of 1,748 air traffic controllers, but in the 2022 season this figure will rise to 1,853 professionals assisting the entire network. The Canary Islands and Balearic Islands archipelagos are the two regions benefitting from the biggest increase in workforce.
