Several beaches in Mallorca become smoke-free

6 July, 2022

Tourist destination Calvià is adding Santa Ponça, Romana-Paguera and Es Carregador-Palmanova beaches to their Smoke-Free Beaches programme, an initiative promoted by the authorities with the aim of raising awareness among citizens and tourists of the importance of maintaining a healthy environment and minimising waste generation on the Mallorcan coastline.

It’s hoped that the initiative will help combat the amount of cigarette butts on the beaches and in the sea, which is of serious environmental concern. A single cigarette butt can pollute up to 10 litres of sea water. The initiative also forms part of ongoing efforts to promote smoke and addiction-free healthy lifestyles.

In line with the programme, the three beaches in Calvià will all be non-smoking. This will help protect the non-smoking population from exposure to tobacco smoke and also ensures a safer environment for children, who could accidentally swallow cigarette butts left behind on the beach.
