MSC’s most eco-efficient cruise ship to operate from the port of Barcelona

13 July, 2022

MSC World Europa will set sail in October 2022 with Barcelona as its port of embarkation from April 2023. The LNG-powered vessel will become the first contemporary cruise ship to incorporate fuel cell technology and has the potential to significantly reduce CO2 emissions.

MSC World Europa’s new solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology, powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), is developed by MSC Cruises, Chantiers de l’Atlantique and Bloom Energy. MSC Cruises’ latest ship will also feature an additional range of solutions to help minimise its impact on air and marine environments.

The cruise ship features a selective catalytic reduction system and increased shore-to-ship power capacity to accelerate the journey to achieving a net zero emissions future. This will make MSC World Europa the greenest and most efficient ship in the MSC Cruises fleet when it enters service in October 2022, as well as the world’s largest LNG-powered cruise ship.
