8 Spanish airports have more air traffic than before the pandemic

5 October, 2022

Throughout the summer, several Spanish airports stood out among the European airports with the highest growth, reaching flows very close to or higher than those of July 2019. Madrid-Barajas Airport (+96.6%) stood out among other hubs and large airports. It only lacked 200 passengers to become one of the Major airports which make up the five main European hub airports.

In the group of those close to achieving a complete recovery compared to pre-pandemic levels, feature Palma de Mallorca Airport (-1.8%), alongside Paris-Orly (-1%), Athens (-4.9%) and Lisbon (-5.4%), all driven predominantly by leisure demand.

An increasing number of regional airports serving popular tourist destinations and/or relying on low-cost carriers reported passenger volumes well above pre-pandemic levels in July 2019, including those in Santiago Compostela (+21%) and Menorca (+11.1%).

Likewise, as far as traffic groups are concerned, Palma de Mallorca (-2%) is one of the airports which registered the greatest growth in passengers during the month of July, remaining very close to (or above) 2019 levels. This airport falls within Group 1 (airports which welcome more than 25 million passengers a year). Gran Canaria (0%) and South Tenerife (-1%) in Group 2 (airports which welcome between 10 and 25 million) and Lanzarote (+7%) and Fuerteventura (+4%) in Group 3.
